Keep pests away

Oh, Winnipeg. We know it doesn’t seem like it, but spring and summer ARE coming, that’s a Bulger Brothers guarantee.

But we hate to be the bearers of bad news – that is also going to bring insects and other pests to your yard.

Good news: you’re at the right place for ways to help you keep the regular nuisances away.

The number one rule: be proactive not reactive. You want to prevent pest problems with measures before they happen, rather than waiting for the damage to happen before you act.

Onto the tips:

  1. Cut your grass!

This is an easy one. The longer your grass is the more attractive it is for unwanted guests. Keep your lawn mowed if you don’t want your yard to be a pest magnet. Or, talk to us about hardscape installation! (LINK TO SERVICE)

  1. Look for mosquito breeding spots

If you have plants in your landscape design that allow water to collect on their leaves, consider swapping those out for some foliage. Look for lemon scented plants, lavender, and or basil to keep mosquitoes away.

  1. Mulch Buffer Zone

If you have or are planning to have mulch or other wood products near your foundation walls, it is best to have a 2 foot buffer around the entire house to keep termites and carpenter ants away. You could replace wood borders with aesthetically pleasing stones. Let us install your mulch beds! We provide full services for mulch installation in Winnipeg.

  1. Trim bushes and trees

This isn’t just to keep your yard looking pretty. Pests use branches as bridges to get onto your home. Leafs and branches also can create too much shade, keeping the soil in your yard very inviting to moisture loving pests.

  1. What lights do you use?

If you have exterior lighting keep in mind insects are drawn to light. Swap out the white bulbs with insect resistant yellow bulbs to help keep bugs away.

  1. Keep Ticks Away

Don’t even give these nasty things a chance. Clean up dead leaves and firewood. Stack wood in neat piles. This also keeps mice away, which ticks love to feed on.

  1. Vole Problem? No problem!

Problems with these guys happens when there is abundant vegetation and debris to take cover and nest in. This goes back to keeping your lawn mowed and garden weeded. Avoid planting dense ground cover plants like creeping junipers. Protect young trees by wrapping the lower trunk with wire mesh.

  1. Wasps! Who Likes Them?

These unpredictable menaces can have chairs and drinks falling all over at your backyard gathering. Keep them away by cleaning up right away after your barbecue, they love meat, meat juice and everything about it. Keep your trash cans sealed. Patch up any cracks or crevices so they can’t burrow into your home. Do whatever it takes to keep them away.
