Green grass
Winnipeg home owners this one is for you as we get roll into spring and lawn care season! Picture it now: you’re driving home from a round of golf, listening to Winnipeg’s own Guess Who, you pull up into your driveway and you can’t help but notice your grass is greener than that course you just left. Sweet! Maximize the green and get a thick, healthy lawn with these tips from Bulger Brothers Landscape in Winnipeg.
Get Prepped
After the long Winnipeg winters there is a ton of debris built up from anything and everything from the family dog to the bone chilling winds. Prep the area by raking the lawn of leaves, twigs and spent perrennials you don’t want around. When your lawn begins to grow in the spring sharpen your mower blades and set the mower height to 2.5”-3”
Weed Control
Set the tone with a pre-emergent weed control product to prevents weeds from showing up in the first place all summer.
Get a crabgrass preventative product to prevent that unsightly plant from maturing.
Fertilize your lawn to give your lawn a nutrition boost. Get a fertilizer that has equal portions of nitrogen, iron and potash
For severe weed problems use a granular weed killer, spot treatment for only a few weeds
Remember, thick and healthy grass is the best defense against weeds.
Watering
If it is a dry spring and you can’t get 1” of rainfall per week then supplement by watering your lawn with 1”-1.5” of water in one or two applications weekly. For newly planted grass, water lightly keeping it moist until it is two inches high. Water in the morning! What better reason to wake up at 6am?
Overseeding
The best success rate for overseeding is when its done in the late summer or fall, but it can be pulled off in the spring as long as you get the seed in the ground and well established before the summer. Overseeding fills in bare spots, improves the thickness and enhances the colour of your lawn.
Reseed
Any time your lawn is thin in areas don’t be afraid to reseed. Make sure you aren’t using a pre-emergent preventer at this time as it will stop your grass seeds from growing.
Mowing
Don’t be tempted to gut the grass too short. Sometimes too short runs the risk of a damaged, dry-looking lawn. When the grass is cut too short it takes the focus, energy and nutrients away from developing a stronger root system and onto regrowing damaged stocks. Trim the top third of the grass’ height!
Have a Fertilizing Schedule
Why would you starve your lawn? All living things need to eat! Research before you decide on when you are going to apply fertilizer. Timeline factors to look into include grass type and variety, location, weather patterns, and more. Don’t forget to winterize your lawn in the fall. Winterizing fertilizers are different and are called NPK (Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium). These fertilizers give the grass a final dose of nutrients before everything freezes for the winter.
